BIO
When Vicky was 10 she was lucky enough to be taught by a female class teacher who rewarded hard work with sewing all afternoon. In the sewing class room there was a double fronted cupboard full of every shade of Anchor Tapestry thread.
Thirty years later Vicky found a library book with Jan Beaney’s work in it and soon after saw Alice Kettle's tremendous wall hangings in Winchester, from there she became hooked!
In 2000, Vicky completed a 4 year City & Guilds Creative Embroidery course. Since then, she has been working as an artist-maker in textiles for over 20 years.
Vicky now enjoys teaching the sewing techniques she uses to create her art. Visit her WORKSHOP page for full details.
ARTWORK
I am drawn to the seasons, the landscape and to nature. I am also attracted to the things that go un-noticed such as the ever changing fragility of old buildings, rusty doors or flaking paint. I love using natural dyes, especially Indigo and woad which I grow in my garden.
When creating new pieces I use two main embroidery techniques: free machine embroidery, where I use the needle and thread to draw my designs in a freehand way.
The second is hand sewing techniques, such as slow stitching and Japanese Boro, where layers of scraps, distressed and pre-used fabrics or paper are used to create a whole new piece by layering, trapping, folding, darning and mending.
I enjoy printing, painting, dyeing and staining fabrics and paper, to create interesting backgrounds. After careful selection, pieces are layered, patched and pieced.
